What is a Fever?
A fever is a body temperature above 37.5°C (99.5°F). It is not a disease but a sign that your body is fighting an infection. Most fevers are caused by viral infections like cold and flu, and they resolve on their own in 2–3 days.
Safe Home Remedies
- Stay hydrated — drink plenty of water, ORS, coconut water, or clear soup. Fever causes fluid loss.
- Rest — let your body focus its energy on fighting the infection.
- Cool compress — place a damp cloth on the forehead to reduce discomfort. Do not use ice-cold water.
- Light clothing — wear loose, light cotton clothes and avoid heavy blankets.
- Lukewarm sponge bath — gently sponging the body with lukewarm water can help bring temperature down.
When to Take Paracetamol (Crocin / Dolo)
Paracetamol (500 mg or 650 mg) is safe and effective for reducing fever and relieving body aches. Adults can take one tablet every 4–6 hours as needed. Do not exceed 4 tablets in 24 hours. Always take after food to avoid stomach irritation.
Foods to Eat During Fever
- Khichdi, dal-chawal, or plain rice — light and easy to digest.
- Fresh fruits like banana, apple, and oranges for vitamins.
- Ginger-tulsi tea with honey — helps soothe throat and reduce fever.
- Avoid heavy, fried, or spicy food until fever is fully gone.
⚠️ See a Doctor Immediately If:
- Temperature crosses 103°F (39.4°C) in adults or 100.4°F (38°C) in infants under 3 months.
- Fever lasts more than 3 days without improvement.
- You have severe headache, stiff neck, or rash — could indicate meningitis.
- Difficulty breathing, chest pain, or confusion.
- Convulsions or unconsciousness.
- Fever in children below 1 year — always consult a doctor.
